Choosing a Wealth Manager in the West Midlands: What Business Owners and Senior Executives Should Look For

By Nick Platt

If you have built a successful business, working in a c-suite role or made partner in your firm, the questions you ask about money often begin to change.

It becomes less about how you can earn more and more about how you can make everything you have worked for support the life you want to live.

How much is enough? When could you afford to step back? How can you protect your family, reduce unnecessary tax and turn your success into lasting personal wealth?

This is often the point at which people begin searching for wealth management in the West Midlands. They quickly discover that there is no shortage of financial advisers in Birmingham and the surrounding region. The real challenge is finding the right one.

Not all financial advice is created equal. Before choosing a wealth manager, here are some of the most important questions to consider.

Look beyond the postcode

Choosing a wealth manager in the West Midlands should mean more than finding a firm with a local office.

Your adviser or financial planner as we like to be called should understand the people, businesses and professional communities that make the region what it is. That includes entrepreneurs preparing to sell their companies, manufacturers creating wealth over generations, professional services partners and senior executives approaching the next stage of their careers.

Local knowledge matters, but so does personal connection. You should be able to sit across the table from your adviser, talk openly about your concerns and build a relationship that grows stronger over time.

Henwood Court has been based at the Cruck Barn in Sutton Coldfield since 2011, working with business owners, senior executives and professionals across Birmingham and the wider West Midlands.

Location is not the whole answer, but it can be the start of a meaningful and lasting relationship.

Ask what wealth management actually includes

For some firms, wealth management means selecting investments and reviewing their performance once a year.

That is investment management. It is important, but it is only one part of genuine wealth management cog, you need more than this.

Great financial planning begins with you, not your money.

Your adviser should take the time to understand your world, your family, your business, your ambitions and your concerns. They should help you explore what a rich and fulfilling life looks like and what you want your wealth to make possible.

Only then, when your advisers knows and understand you should the conversation move towards pensions, investments, tax planning, estate planning and protection. Then, decisions about what you need to do become much easier.

The technical advice matters enormously, but it should always serve a bigger purpose. If the first conversation focuses on products rather than your life, it may not be the right meeting for you.

Find out how personal the service really is

Many wealth management firms talk about personal service. It is worth asking what that means in practice.

Ask how many clients each financial planner looks after and who will be supporting you day to day.

A planner working with hundreds of clients may struggle to understand the detail of your life or provide the level of attention you expect. Firms that deliberately limit their client numbers can invest more time in every relationship and deliver a genuinely personal experience.

At Henwood Court, each financial planner works with a small, select number of clients. Every client is supported by a dedicated team, including a chartered financial planner, an associate financial planner and a client service associate.

The aim is to make you feel understood, supported and confident that someone is always looking ahead for you.

Check the qualifications behind the title

Terms such as wealth manager and financial adviser can cover a wide range of experience and qualifications.

Chartered status is one of the clearest indications of technical knowledge, professional standards and a commitment to ongoing development. Chartered financial planners must meet rigorous criteria set by the Chartered Insurance Institute and continue to demonstrate that those standards are being maintained.

You should also ask whether the firm is independent and able to consider solutions from across the whole market.

Qualifications are not the only thing that matters, but they should give you confidence that the advice you receive is technically robust.

Ask how investment decisions are made

Your investments should not be managed in isolation from the rest of your financial plan.

Ask the firm to explain its investment philosophy in clear language. How does it manage risk? How widely are investments diversified? How does it control costs? Are decisions based on evidence and long-term principles, or predictions about what markets might do next?

A good wealth manager should be able to explain not only where your money will be invested, but why that approach is appropriate for your goals.

The strategy should be designed to support the life you want, rather than simply chasing performance.

Ask how clients measure the relationship

Investment returns matter, but they do not tell you everything about the value of financial planning.

Ask how existing clients feel about the service. Do they feel understood? Are they clearer about their future? Do they feel more confident when making important decisions? Has the advice helped them achieve the things that matter most?

Look for independently gathered feedback and genuine client stories, rather than relying solely on awards or figures for assets under management.

The best measure of a wealth manager is often the difference they make to their clients’ lives.
