It’s Never Too Late to Make a Dream Take Flight

By Georgia Platt

After years of dreaming about flying in a Spitfire, one of our longstanding clients, Richard, finally took to the skies. And what an experience it was!

At Henwood Court, we often talk about the importance of living a rich life, not just a wealthy one. But every so often, a story comes along that reminds us exactly why we do what we do.

This is one of those stories.

On 16th August, our client Richard, who has been part of the Henwood Court family for over 15 years, finally fulfilled a lifelong ambition: flying in a Spitfire.

Richard has always had a love for aviation, and taking to the skies in one of Britain’s most iconic aircraft had been on his wish list for a very long time.

And when I say a long time, I really do mean it!

A dream that was a long time coming

When Richard’s Financial Planner, Anthony Richards, shared the exciting news with the team, our very own Yvonne Till was particularly delighted.

She remembered Richard talking about this dream years ago, so we decided to do a little digging through his old financial planning action lists.

And there it was, in black and white, dating all the way back to 2018:

“Spitfire flight. Richard to book a flight in a Spitfire and fly a Jet Ranger helicopter.”

Eight years later, Richard had finally made it happen!

For the team, who had seen this ambition on Richard’s action list for so many years, hearing that he had finally made it happen was a particularly special moment.

Taking to the skies

Richard taking off!

On 16th August, Richard headed to Tatenhill Airfield, near Lichfield, ready for an experience he had dreamed about for years.

And he certainly wasn’t going to do things by halves.

During the flight, Richard experienced two victory rolls, one to the left and one to the right. Not quite content with that, he even asked whether they could throw in a loop-the-loop for good measure!

Unfortunately, the loop wasn’t possible. Although, judging by his enthusiasm, I suspect Richard would have happily spent the rest of the afternoon upside down if he’d been allowed!

Last week, I had the pleasure of speaking with Richard about his adventure, and it was wonderful to hear just how much the experience meant to him.

Even weeks later, he was still absolutely elated.

When I asked him how he’d describe it, his response said it all:

"Awesome experience and I'd do it again in a heartbeat."

— Richard

And therein lies the only problem…

Having finally ticked the Spitfire flight off his list, Richard now wants to do it all over again!

This is what financial planning is really about

Stories like Richard’s bring so much pleasure to everyone here at Henwood Court.

Yes, we help our clients manage their money, make informed investment decisions and plan for their financial future. But what makes our work so rewarding is seeing what those plans make possible in real life.

It’s the experiences, the memories and the moments that might otherwise remain on a wish list.

Richard’s story is a wonderful example of why we take the time to really get to know our clients, not just their finances, but their ambitions, passions and the things that matter most to them.

Because sometimes, the most meaningful part of a financial plan isn’t a number on a page. It’s a moment like this.

And if there’s one thing we can all take from Richard’s adventure, it’s that it’s never too late to go after something you’ve always dreamed of doing.

Here’s to the next adventure!

Richard, thank you for allowing us to share your wonderful story. We’re absolutely delighted that you finally took that flight.

Although, Anthony might need to add a new action at your next meeting: Book another Spitfire flight!

Because life isn’t just about the wealth you build. It’s about what that wealth allows you to experience.

And that, for all of us at Henwood Court, is what financial planning is really about.

A smile that says it all! After years of dreaming, Richard finally took to the skies. A wonderful reminder that it's never too late to make a dream come true. Here's to many more adventures, Richard!

So, what’s still on your wish list?

If you’d like to explore how thoughtful financial planning can help turn your ambitions into reality, we’d love to hear from you.
